SMAK 1 BPK Penabur

What values are implemented at BPK Penabur Jakarta?

  • Etiwati, S.Pd., M.M.
Students and teachers apply values especially in character, namely Christian values which we call PKBN2K “Character Education Based on Christian Values”. In its implementation we provide profiles for teachers and students. For teachers it is called the PENABURS profile, this PENABURS profile is an acronym for “Professionalism, Enthusiasm, Nurture, Ability to learn, Believe in God, Unselfishness, Respect for others and Satisfaction”. As for students, we provide a profile to be achieved when they complete their education at Penabur and in the process, namely BEST “Be tough, Excel worldwide, Share with Society and Trust in God”. These are the values that we apply at BPS Penabur to be implemented, both by education personnel and by all students ranging from kindergarten, elementary, junior high, high school both national and SPK programs.

What are the advantages of SMAK 1 Penabur Jakarta?

  • Sylviana Chrisyan, S.E., M.M.
We have a vision of superior human resources, because superior human resources can also prepare them to become the next generation of the nation. On the one hand, SMAK 1 Penabur has excellent programs, one of which is the I-Project program where we train, guide and develop the potential of our students in the STEM field and also in other fields in making a project. As long as they attend SMAK 1 Penabur they will make at least one project where they find this project because they care and empathize with the environmental problems around them and they try to make solutions to existing problems through the projects they make and the projects they make are tailored to the passions, interests, and talents of each student. Thus this I-project in the stem field and also in other fields stimulates our students so that they can find their identity, find their passion and they can do something more than just understanding science in theory, but they can also practice it, they can interpret and apply all the knowledge they can integrate in a project.

When and how did you start and reach your current career position?

  • Dra. Lily Setiaty
I became a biology teacher when I was studying at IKIP Jakarta, and I ended up loving it. I am grateful that as a biology teacher I was able to teach for 30 years at SMAK 1 Penabur. I see children from the first time who don’t like it, I often get children who don’t like biology but when I hold them, they end up becoming “I like it, ma’am”. Among these students who made me proud for the first time was my student Carina Joe, if you look at my experience teaching Carina Joe I might never have imagined, but when Carina Joe mentioned my name, I was very touched, I didn’t expect her to remember her teacher.

Do you believe that family or friends have an influence in deciding to pursue a career in STEM?

  • Dra. Lily Setiaty
I think the influence of friends and family is huge for teenagers, I also have teenagers so the influence of friends is huge. But support from parents is also very important. So when there are parents who do not support, they may not continue, but when their friends introduce them, they follow their friends and finally they feel their passion there and are supported by their parents. But the opposite is if the parents don’t support it even though the child likes it when the parents don’t support it, there must also be a problem between the two like that.

Can you explain the key success factors for you to reach this level?

  • Dra. Lily Setiaty
My success factors include the willingness to learn, learning from anywhere whether from friends, from books or from other media it can be a factor to increase our existence. and students can also be material for my learning, when children ask me a lot, whether I want it or not, I also have to prepare myself for what? to increase my knowledge it also affects if the child does not ask a lot Maybe I will also stay straight so learning can be from anywhere.

Have you ever had an influential mentor in your life?

  • Dra. Lily Setiaty
All can be mentors, there are from my senior friends if you want to learn biology from mentors my friends are many of them are the same as when I taught together teaching Carina, I taught it together with my mentor named Mr. Tejo I worked with Mr. Tejo to complement each other. I learn more knowledge not only from one teacher so there is one teacher that I can take knowledge from, like Mr. Tejo or with my other seniors Mrs. Murni for example or Mrs. Ane can also add to my insight. For me, everyone can be a mentor for me.

Do you think schools can encourage women to pursue subjects and careers in STEM fields?

  • Dra. Lily Setiaty
The role of the teacher is quite large, especially in directing, directing students to become more interested from those who were initially not interested maybe by our methods, by describing us, motivating us. Sometimes I like when I teach, for example, teaching has nothing to do with it, but we look at the inventors, I say, are there any of you whose names want to be immortalized? If you think about it, for example, your name is immortalized as the name of an organ, would you like your name to be immortalized there so that I am interesting, especially since it is rare, people who want to become researchers work, it is very difficult, very rare, from there I say, would you like to be immortalized? What I do in the classroom is that I try to direct sometimes when teaching biotechnology I direct these dreams that will appear in the future who knows you will be the character, sometimes I am always interesting so that children are interested.
  • Etiwati, S.Pd., M.M
At BPK Penabur Jakarta, we are committed to encouraging STEM learning to be more widely known to children, namely by what at the high school level, especially with the Merdeka curriculum, we provide various choices of subjects that students are interested in and one of which we also provide is STEM. Here students can choose four subjects, one of which is STEM. Now of course this is an opportunity for students to learn more, we hope that in the future BPK Penabur Jakarta will give birth to a new Carina Joe figure that we can see her work and dedication both in Indonesia and for the world community.
  • Sylviana Chrisyan, S.E., M.M
We at SMAK 1 Penabur Jakarta will continue to be committed to continue working on our vision of preparing children as inventors, as future scientists who not only master science and technology, but they are also creative, independent, proactive and care about their surroundings.

Do you have any advice or tips for young women in STEM fields?

  • Dra. Lily Setiaty
Advice for young women who want to study STEM, don’t be afraid, indeed in Indonesia it is a bit difficult to work but don’t be afraid because with perseverance and courage, I am sure you can you can because indeed the lessons that are said to be STEM are indeed a bit difficult, especially in Indonesia, sometimes the work is also difficult to find if outside may be different. Sometimes parents like to say “how will you work later?” so yes, but I think don’t be afraid that what can be highlighted is that SMAK 1 alumni students are capable, able to remain diligent according to their passion in the field they like. So don’t be afraid when you have a love for STEM but there are many challenges from outside. I think just keep going, then maybe you can find a mentor that suits you or find a community, so to increase your confidence so that you can stay confident.
  • Etiwati, S.Pd., M.M.
We think that women having a career or also pursuing education in STEM is something that is very possible even though at BPK Penabur we do not limit gender issues. However, we provide opportunities for all employees, both men and women, to be able to develop themselves, for example with further studies. Many colleagues are taking advanced studies in fields such as science, technology, mathematics and so on. This is to strengthen what they already have and in the end the STEM learning in schools that we also implement can be given with the right good things that can be inspired by the educators because indeed they also get what they have gone through in their advanced studies. So for BPK Penabur Jakarta, we are very supportive for women to develop their talents in the STEM field, of course for the progress of the Indonesian nation and state.
  • Dra. Lily Setiaty
So for all women, don’t be afraid to work, there are many examples of women who have succeeded, and even though in the future you have succeeded, stay humble.
